Before Pornsak Pichetshote was writing some of the most interesting comics on the shelves, he was helping other creators make them.

His career has taken an unusual path: from acclaimed editor at DC's legendary Vertigo imprint, to television executive helping build DC's presence on television, to walking away from the executive world to pursue writing himself.

That decision eventually led to Infidel, The Good Asian, Dead Boy Detectives, The Horizon Experiment, Exquisite Corpses and now a return to DC with one of his biggest projects yet: Absolute Green Arrow.

Collector's Paradise has been fortunate to work with Pornsak on signings and Signature Series projects, including our Absolute Green Arrow signing with artist Rafael Albuquerque.

And with two new signed series now underway, it's a perfect time to look at how Pornsak got here.

Before Writing Comics: Pornsak Pichetshote at Vertigo

Long before readers knew Pornsak as a comic book writer, he was a comic book editor.

Pornsak spent roughly seven years at Vertigo, DC's groundbreaking mature-readers imprint, working on books including The Losers, The Unwritten, Unknown Soldier, Sweet Tooth and Daytripper.

It was an extraordinary place to learn comics.

As an editor, Pornsak worked alongside writers and artists developing stories rather than writing his own. Books from his time at Vertigo received extensive critical recognition, with projects such as Daytripper and Sweet Tooth becoming lasting parts of the Vertigo library.

But comics weren't the only direction his career would take.

From Vertigo Comics to DC Television

Pornsak eventually moved from Vertigo's New York editorial offices to Los Angeles and DC Entertainment's media operation.

There, he helped establish and eventually oversee DC's television department during an enormously important period for DC characters on television.

His work involved shows including Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Constantine and iZombie — part of the television boom that introduced a new generation of viewers to DC characters.

It sounds like the kind of career move most people would never walk away from.

Pornsak did.

He had always wanted to write.

And when he finally left his executive career to pursue writing full-time, success didn't arrive immediately. Pornsak has spoken about going roughly two years without getting meaningful writing work after leaving DC.

Eventually, that gamble paid off.

Infidel: From Editor to Comic Book Writer

In 2018, Image Comics published Infidel, written by Pornsak Pichetshote with art by Aaron Campbell.

The five-issue horror series follows an American Muslim woman and her neighbors living in an apartment building haunted by supernatural entities that feed on xenophobia.

It was an effective introduction to something that would become a recurring feature of Pornsak's writing: using recognizable genres to explore subjects considerably larger than the genre itself.

Infidel is a haunted-house story.

But it's also about racism, xenophobia, fear and the way those forces affect the people living around us.

The series received widespread critical attention and established Pornsak not as a former editor trying his hand at writing, but as a writer with a very distinctive perspective of his own.

His next major creator-owned series would take that even further.

The Good Asian

In 2021, Pornsak and artist Alexandre Tefenkgi launched The Good Asian through Image Comics.

The ten-issue noir series follows Chinese-American detective Edison Hark through 1930s San Francisco Chinatown, using the structure of a classic detective story to explore a period of American history shaped by anti-Chinese immigration laws and discrimination.

Once again, the genre was familiar.

This time it was noir.

But the perspective wasn't.

The Good Asian became Pornsak's breakthrough work, earning both an Eisner Award and a Harvey Award, including the 2022 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series and the Harvey Award for Book of the Year.

It firmly established Pornsak as one of the industry's notable crime and genre writers.

And it opened the door to an increasingly diverse group of projects.

Dead Boy Detectives, Man's Best and The Horizon Experiment

Pornsak returned to the world of DC and Vertigo with The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives, bringing Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland into a supernatural mystery involving Thai ghosts and mythology.

For BOOM! Studios, he created Man's Best, a science-fiction adventure about three emotional-support pets trying to find their missing humans after becoming stranded on an alien world.

And with Image Comics, Pornsak spearheaded The Horizon Experiment, an initiative built around taking familiar genres and pop-culture archetypes and reimagining them around protagonists from backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in those genres.

That idea feels particularly appropriate for a writer whose career has repeatedly involved taking familiar storytelling structures and asking what else can be done with them.

Which brings us back to Green Arrow.

Pornsak Pichetshote Reinvents Green Arrow

In 2026, Pornsak returned to DC for Absolute Green Arrow, with artist Rafael Albuquerque.

But this isn't simply another version of Oliver Queen shooting trick arrows.

DC's Absolute Universe strips familiar characters down and rebuilds them under very different circumstances. For Green Arrow, Pornsak and Rafael turned toward urban horror and murder mystery.

A serial killer is targeting corrupt billionaires.

The calling card?

Green arrows left in the victims.

And Oliver Queen is already dead.

The mystery draws Dinah Lance — Absolute Black Canary — into an investigation involving familiar DC archers reimagined for the Absolute Universe.

DC itself described the series as an urban-horror reinvention of Green Arrow, and demand for the launch was strong enough that Absolute Green Arrow #1 went back to press for a second printing before the first issue had even reached stores.

For Pornsak, there's something wonderfully full-circle about the project.

The former DC editor and television executive who walked away to become a writer is now back at DC, this time writing and reinventing one of its major characters.

Collector's Paradise, Pornsak Pichetshote and Absolute Green Arrow

We've had the opportunity to work directly with Pornsak on Absolute Green Arrow.

Collector's Paradise offered Absolute Green Arrow #1–6 as a complete Signature Series, with all six issues signed by Pornsak Pichetshote.

We also hosted an in-person Absolute Green Arrow signing with Pornsak and artist Rafael Albuquerque, giving Southern California readers an opportunity to meet the creative team behind the series.

And we're not stopping at issue #6.

From Absolute Green Arrow to Exquisite Corpses

At the same time Pornsak is exploring murder and wealth in the Absolute Universe, he's also working in a very different corner of horror.

Exquisite Corpses, created by James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh, imagines an America secretly controlled by thirteen wealthy families who periodically select killers and unleash them into a deadly competition.

Pornsak was part of the team of writers contributing to the original Exquisite Corpses series.

Now he's taking one of its killers in a new direction.

Exquisite Corpses: Lone Gunman

Exquisite Corpses: Lone Gunman is a new five-issue miniseries written by Pornsak Pichetshote with art by Alberto Ponticelli, colors by Jordie Bellaire and lettering by Becca Carey.

The series expands the mythology of the Lone Gunman and follows survivors of the original Exquisite Corpses story as the legacy of the golden mask comes back into their lives.

There's also a fascinating connection to Pornsak's past.

Pornsak and Alberto Ponticelli previously worked together on Unknown Soldier — but at the time, Pornsak was the editor and Ponticelli was the artist.

More than fifteen years later, they're working together again.

This time Pornsak is the writer.

A Career Built Around Looking at Familiar Stories Differently

There is a thread running through much of Pornsak Pichetshote's work.

Infidel takes the haunted-house story somewhere different.

The Good Asian approaches classic noir from a perspective rarely represented in the genre.

The Horizon Experiment explicitly asks what happens when familiar genres are rebuilt around different kinds of protagonists.

And Absolute Green Arrow takes one of DC's longest-running superheroes and turns his mythology into an urban-horror murder mystery.

That's quite a journey for someone who once sat on the other side of the desk helping other creators tell their stories.
