One of Comics' Great Superhero Historians

Waid has written for virtually every major American comics publisher, including DC, Marvel, Archie, Dark Horse, Image and Top Cow. DC's own creator biography highlights his work on JLA, 52, The Brave and the Bold, Legion of Super-Heroes, X-Men and Fantastic Four, while identifying his long run on The Flash and his collaboration with Alex Ross on Kingdom Come among the defining projects of his career.

His reputation as a walking encyclopedia of superhero history is not just a fan description. That encyclopedic knowledge has repeatedly become part of the stories themselves, whether he is rebuilding Superman's origin in Birthright, exploring the history of the DC Universe, or connecting generations of heroes in a modern Justice League story.

Kingdom Come and The Flash

For many readers, two works immediately define Mark Waid.

His years on The Flash helped redefine Wally West, expanding the mythology of the Speed Force and turning Wally from the former Kid Flash into a hero capable of standing fully on his own. The run remains one of the most influential modern periods in the character's history.

Then came Kingdom Come, created with Alex Ross. The 1996 series imagined a future in which a new generation of reckless heroes had pushed the classic Justice League aside. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their peers are forced to confront not only the new heroes, but questions about what superheroism is supposed to represent. The series became one of DC's most enduring graphic novels and earned multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards.

Those two projects show two sides of Waid's writing particularly well: an enormous command of continuity, and an ability to use that continuity in service of character rather than simply nostalgia.

Superman, World's Finest and the Modern DC Universe

Waid's work with Superman has become another major pillar of his career. Superman: Birthright offered a modern retelling of Superman's origin, while more recent projects have returned him to the center of DC storytelling.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest pairs the two most famous heroes in comics while leaning into the colorful, adventurous spirit of classic DC. Rather than treating continuity as something to escape from, Waid uses it as a playground, bringing in Robin, Supergirl, the Doom Patrol and many other corners of the DC Universe.

That same approach carries through Justice League Unlimited, Action Comics, Batman & Robin: Year One, Absolute Power and New History of the DC Universe. DC selected Waid to guide readers through that new history precisely because so much of his career has been spent understanding how the company's enormous fictional world fits together.

Waid's career spans generations of superhero comics, but his current work does not feel like a victory lap. He remains deeply involved in major new DC projects and continues to write characters he has known for decades without treating them like museum pieces.

His best stories understand that continuity matters because readers care about the people inside it. The history creates weight, but character creates emotion.
